To Gift Knit or not to gift knit?

Are you suddenly aware of the date and how close it is to gift giving time? I pretty much have a policy against giving knit gifts. I don’t really appreciate other people’s crafty crap and guess other people feel the same way about mine. However, I’ve started to think about a few little gifts - a dishcloth in candy cane colors with a few balls of colored soap for the wonderful lady who runs the daycare center at the gym or a bucket hat made from black bulky wool with trendsetter fluff for my babysitter. Are these appropriate gifts or are they just more crap to clutter up their house?

Do you give knitted gifts? Do you actually think the people you give them to appreciate them? Can I get an absolution and start something cool for myself instead?

My rule of thumb is to only make gifts for people that I know are going to appreciate them. For example, I’m making a big gift for my mom this year. I know she’ll like it because she taught me how to knit so she appreciates these sorts of things. My exception to this rule is if it is something small to supplement other things, like the dishcloth with the soap, or in my case a couple of flower washcloths to throw in with some bath stuff.

I’m with Sarah B…I only give knitted gifts to those who I know will truly appreciate them. I’m lucky though, that the majority of those who I gift at the Holidays also love me to knit for them.

BUT! I hereby grant you absolution from gift knitting and support you whole-heartedly in starting something cool for yourself.

My rule is to NEVER, NEVER knit anything unless I’m passionate about it. The only exception to my rule is anything my grand-daughter wants. :o

I give knitted gifts but often they are in addition too something I bought–or for a babysitter–a check or gift card. I knit simple scarves mostly. The love them though. I just started winding yarn for my MIL’s Christmas scarf. The freaking ribbon yarn took me one hour to wind! When it is a knitted gift alone, I have often asked in advance if they would like so and so…and what color they prefer. I have had nothing but tremendous appreciation so far. :)

I generally only knit gifts for those that I know will appreciate them. But, I’m a bit of a selfish knitter and I generally only knit for myself. This being the case, of course I grant you absolution!

I agree with Sarah B. above. Only give handmade gifts to people who will appreciate them. I knit only for my parents and in-laws, and really not sure the in-laws truly appreciate it except for my bald father in law and watch caps. So, you have the absolution you want, but if you truly know that someone would LOVE a Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky scarf in 2-2 rib, make it. But only if you feel like it. The holidays are stressful enough.

Ditto on what’s already been said. I made an afghan once as a wedding gift for a good friend. The last time I was at his home their dog was using the afghan as a combination bed/chew toy. Sigh.

I’ve always thought that when something is made with love, the recipient will be wrapped in that love each time they wear/use it. Yeah, I know…I have a great fantasy life… ;)

I made a pact w myself to NEVER knit for anyone but me, but I generously will offer to teach anyone how to knit.

I used to go by whoever would appreciate what I make, but I was wrong a couple of times. I now only knit for people that have specifically asked me to. Three gifts are going out this season. You certainly don’t have to ask for absolution:) Knit away!! Your loved ones will appreciate the calmness that will reside over you during the season!! That is what I try to tell myself.
