Friday is just another day
Posted by amy on July 1st, 2005 filed in more knittingwhen you are unemployed, and with the long weekend coming up, everyone is away so I don’t feel guilty not looking for a job today. Now that I have my excuses out of the way, lets move on, shall we?
I was really hoping today would be new threads friday, but I’m about 3/4″ from the casting off on my collar for my golf style shirt (Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Knitter’s Almanac) . Modifications, I made a few:
1) EZ has you do a provisional cast on at the bottom, then an I-Cord cast on for the sleeves. I like the look of the I-Cord cast on and thought it might prevent the dreaded roll up over the belly that plauges my Shapely Tank. So, I cast on 10 stitches, worked in garter stitch with an I-Cord at one side. I did two pieces, one for the front and one for the back, to give a nice little slit in the bottom. I then picked up one stitch for every garter ridge all the way around, joined and knit on to the sleeves.
2) My sleeves are a bit shorter than they should be, hitting my arm at the widest point. I think I may look into making them longer, but will see what it looks like bocking.
3) Shaping. As you all know, I’m a pear, my breast size is, and will most likely remain, about 6″ smaller than my hips. To compensate for this, I’ve tried a few things. For the Shapely Tank, I cast on the for the hip, and decreased for the bust. For my Mirror Mirror, I cast on for the hip, and put in two bust darts. For this one, I cast on using a size 7 needle and then, about 8″ up, (out of 16″) I switched to size 5. The result is a top that fits great through the bust, and has a little flow through the tummy, without looking like an a-line dress.
This sweater was a chore from start to finish. I bought the yarn on an impulse at from the knitting dominatrix, threw out her design and put the yarn in the back of my closet. Feeling guilty about the purchase, I pulled the yarn out with the intention of making a practical garmet. The yarn isn’t really me, but the design is, and I do like the look. But, finishing this was like making sure I eat my salad every day, I know it is good for me even on days when I’m craving something else.

Well, if it’s salad, it’s tasty. I’ve just been reading the Knitter’s Almanac again (fave chapter title of all time has got to be ‘Nether Garments’), and it’s fun to see a ‘live’ golf shirt. I like that neckline and think it’s flattering. And wouldn’t it make a cute little boy’s top? Maybe with long sleeves for fall? Maybe in denim? OK I’ll stop now, especially since you didn’t enjoy it the first time around. xox Kay
