mommychic & women’s studies

It is almost time! Elizabeth over at CurlyPurls will be hosting a MommyChic along, watch this space for details.

When I was in college, my womenfriends and I were completely overtaken with women’s studies and gender theory. We founded The Women’s Issues Theme House, we sponsered speakers and designed our senior thesis around gender issues - we liked to think we gave feminism a good name. In grad school I tried to keep up, but ended up getting seduced by a dead gay man . Eight years in the heavily male dominated financial services industry put the final nail in my women’s studies consciousness.

I want to fall in love again, and I’m thinking of designing a 21st century women’s studies class as a project for one of my classes. But where to start? How about with my wise and brilliant readers?

If you could assign one book to college age women for an intro class, what would it be? What was your favorite book? What would you avoid?

The results so far:
A Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
Possession by A.S. Byatt
In a Different Voice by Carol Gilligan
Personal Politics by Sara Evans

What do you think?

I would recommend “A Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood and “Possession” by A.S. Byatt. Good luck! Keep us posted!

  2. Rosemary says:

“In a Different Voice” by Carol Gilligan is still a classic after 20+ years (and making undergraduates buy it helps keep me employed). Seriously–Gilligan’s critique of developmental psychology by men is interesting on its own and because it give undergraduates a look at the broader criticism of the traditional social sciences.

Interesting question– How about “Writing a Woman’s Life” by Carolyn Heilbrun. It really affected me at age 21, and it would go over well in an intro class, I think. (Best to save the Haraway and Butler til after theyve changed their majors…!)

  4. Kay says:

The Women’s Room by Madeline French — don’t remember it but remember being quite affected by it as a college student.

The Second Sex–or perhaps excerpts? Simone had beaucoup to say.

I think very young women need a bit of schooling in the bad old days and why they were bad and why we might not want to go back without a lot of kicking and screaming.

I’d be very interested in your final list. It sounds wonderful. I would recommend The Bone People by Keri Hulme.

  6. Amy says:

Bastard Out of Carlolina? Rubyfruit Jungle (!)? Ooo, Atwood’s Edible Woman or Cat’s Eye? Something by MFK Fisher?

I am a little late, but I would recommend Clear Light of Day by Anita Desai. It is a quiet book, but there is a lot there.

How about, “Games Your Mother Never Taught You,” by Betty Lee Harrigan? (I think that is the author….talks about how women get stymied by business because they do not understand the concept of “the game.” And, this may sound off the wall, but how about “Portait of a Lady?” by Henry James?

I know this may sound odd, but some days I feel as if I just woke up intellectually. What was I thinking when I decided to become a political science major?
